Hand Forged Peels & Pokers
Oven Peel: $237.00
Long Poker: $135.00
Modeled after a peel used in Deerfield, MA in 1780. This iron peel, made by a blacksmith of wrought iron, was a necessity around the kitchen fireplace. It could function as a fire tool to move pieces of wood and as a shovel to remove ashes and to place and remove food from deep in the oven. It was also used to settle the hot ashes on the hearth so that a Dutch oven could be set down for cooking. The long handle helped to keep the user at a distance from the hot wood fire. Many times the blacksmith used his artistic talents to create a handle that was beautiful as well as useful. This handle is called a Ram's horn - made by heating the iron, then splitting the iron, shaping and forming a scroll.
