Description

Betty Lamp – Many shapes of the Betty Lamps were designed and used during the 18th and 19th Centuries. The most common were made with rounded sides and a shallow reservoir with a spout at one end.The wick was layed in the spout so it would just stick up enough to light.

These lamps burned many types of oil , often animal fats and grease were used. Fish oil did not work well and were very smoky. These simple lamps produced good light for there time and were used in very rural areas until the mid 19th Century.
